SOCIAL INTERVENTIONS

Gordon’s Bay is known for its generosity, but this has unfortunately contributed to a growing homelessness crisis. Many individuals now see our town as a place of opportunity, leading to an increasing number of people sleeping in public spaces such as the Post Office, church grounds, outside local businesses, and near the BP garage.

While compassion is important, unstructured giving often has unintended consequences. The availability of handouts encourages individuals to remain on the streets rather than seeking sustainable solutions, such as employment or rehabilitation.

At the same time, drug abuse has become a growing concern, contributing to criminal activities and affecting the overall safety and well-being of our community. Without intervention, this cycle of substance abuse, vagrancy, and public disturbances will continue to impact our town’s security, cleanliness, and quality of life.

Addressing the Issue

To create a safe and thriving community, we need to:

Promote responsible giving – Support structured social upliftment programs rather than direct handouts.
Work with local authorities – Ensure proper monitoring and intervention strategies.
Support rehabilitation and job-seeking efforts – Encourage long-term solutions for those in need.
Protect public spaces – Maintain a clean and welcoming environment for residents and visitors.

This is an ongoing challenge that requires community-wide cooperation. By taking the right steps, we can create a balanced approach that supports those in need while ensuring Gordon’s Bay remains a safe and beautiful place for everyone.
