Gordon’s Bay SAPS operates with limited resources, and while we receive support from the Station Commander and staff, they are stretched to their limits. Preventative policing is currently insufficient, and the presence of traffic, law enforcement, and metro policing is inadequate to address growing lawlessness due to staffing constraints.
Our area faces significant challenges, including an increasing vagrancy issue, illegal trading along the beachfront, loitering, begging, public alcohol consumption, excessive noise from boom boxes, theft from motor vehicles, harassment of residents and visitors by street children, vandalism, petty crime, and other unlawful activities.
To address these concerns, visible policing is a top priority. The GBVID plans to implement foot patrols, a proven strategy in other areas to combat these issues. An initial 12-hour shift model will be considered, covering peak hours across the week, with flexibility to adjust based on emerging needs.
Additionally, we recognize the importance of a 24/7 monitored camera system to enhance security. We aim to integrate our efforts with the Community Policing Forum (CPF), Neighbourhood Watches, and Watchdog, which are currently developing a surveillance network across Gordon’s Bay. There are already clusters of installed cameras within the GBVID area, which will help expand our coverage.
Collaboration is essential. We will work closely with the Gordon’s Bay CPF, local Neighbourhood Watches, the Gordon’s Bay Residents Association, and the Gordon’s Bay Business Association to foster a coordinated approach to safety. Our goal is to ensure the security of residents and businesses, creating a safer and more welcoming environment for all.
